もっとも初期の部類に属する1972年のメタルトップ。70年代に、アンディー・パウエルのフライングVとツインリードで無敵をほこったウイッシュ・ボーン・アッシュの美形ギタリスト、ローリー･ワイズフィールドが、まだLondonに工房を構えていた頃のトニーにオーダーしたレアもの。初期型にだけみられる、2Pボディー・ネックで、“シンクメタル”とよばれる、ボディーに沈み込んだトップ・プレート仕様。
同じ時期に、マーク･ボラン、ロン・ウッド、グレッグ・レイク、トニー・ヴィスコンティーらに、同じスペックのプリアンプ内蔵型モデルが製作された。ギブソンのナンバードHBは、ドライヴ感のある中音域が特徴で、メタルのキンキーな高音と融合して、ブリティッシュロックの全盛期を支えた。
One of the earliest Metal-Top, dated 1972. While based in London, Tony got the order from Laurie Wisefield, the good-looking guitar player of Wishbone Ash, awesome band known for Andy Powell's Flying V and twin lead guitars. 2-piece body and neck, very rare, only seen in early period. This model is a so-called Sink Metal, i.e. top plate sunken in the body. Around the same time, same models with a built-in pre-amp were made for such rock stars as Marc Bolan, Ron Wood, Greg Lake, and Tony Visconti. With a driving mid-range, characteristic of Gibson's numbered humbuckers, and the metal's kinky high-range, this guitar supported British rock's golden era.
